چکیده

Abstract Background and Aims The leaf economic spectrum (LES) is related to dry mass nutrient investments towards photosynthetic processes structures, the duration of returns on those (leaf lifespan, LL). Phosphorus (P) a key limiting for plant growth, yet it unclear how allocation P among different functions coordinated with LES. We addressed this question 12 evergreen woody species co-occurring P-impoverished soils in south-eastern Australia. Methods Leaf ‘economic’ traits, including LL, per area (LMA), light-saturated net rate (A ), dark respiration rate, concentration ([P total ]), nitrogen concentration, resorption, were measured three pioneer nine non-pioneer species. was separated into five functional fractions: orthophosphate (P i metabolite M nucleic acid N lipid L residual R ; phosphorylated proteins unidentified compounds that contain P). Results LL negatively correlated A positively LMA, representing Pioneers occurred short-LL end exhibited higher [P ] than species, primarily associated concentrations , . There no significant correlations between fractions or while Conclusions Allocation varied substantially This variation partially LES, which may provide mechanism underlying co-occurrence ecological strategies under limitation.

Leaf Phosphorus Diagnosis of Sugarcane on Organic Soils

Most of the sugarcane (interspecific hybrids of Saccharum sp.) production in Florida is on organic soils. Supplemental phosphorus (P) fertilizer is often applied for optimum yields, but producers are required to reduce P levels in farm drainage waters. The objectives of this study were to relate optimum leaf P tissue concentration with yield in organic soil, and to determine optimum leaf sampli...

Plant adaptations to severely phosphorus-impoverished soils.

Mycorrhizas play a pivotal role in phosphorus (P) acquisition of plant roots, by enhancing the soil volume that can be explored. Non-mycorrhizal plant species typically occur either in relatively fertile soil or on soil with a very low P availability, where there is insufficient P in the soil solution for mycorrhizal hyphae to be effective. Soils with a very low P availability are either old an...

Proteaceae from severely phosphorus-impoverished soils extensively replace phospholipids with galactolipids and sulfolipids during leaf development to achieve a high photosynthetic phosphorus-use-efficiency.

Proteaceae species in south-western Australia occur on severely phosphorus (P)-impoverished soils. They have very low leaf P concentrations, but relatively fast rates of photosynthesis, thus exhibiting extremely high photosynthetic phosphorus-use-efficiency (PPUE). Although the mechanisms underpinning their high PPUE remain unknown, one possibility is that these species may be able to replace p...

Biological and geochemical controls on phosphorus fractions in semiarid soils

This study examined the concentration of organic and inorganic phosphorus in surface soils of a Bouteloua gracilis-Bouteloua eriopoda grassland, and a Larrea tridentata shrubland, in the northern Chihuahuan Desert, New Mexico, USA. In this desert where the grassland vegetation has a uniform spatial distribution and individual shrubs have a patchy spatial distribution across the landscape, veget...

Are leaf physiological traits related to leaf water isotopic enrichment in restinga woody species?

During plant-transpiration, water molecules having the lighter stable isotopes of oxygen and hydrogen evaporate and diffuse at a faster rate through the stomata than molecules having the heavier isotopes, which cause isotopic enrichment of leaf water. Although previous models have assumed that leaf water is well-mixed and isotopically uniform, non-uniform stomatal closure, promoting different e...
