An open-cage fullerene incorporating phosphorous ylid and carbonyl group moieties on the rim of orifice can be filled with gases (H2, He, Ne) in solid state, cage opening then contracted situ by raising temperature to complete an intramolecular Wittig reaction, trapping atom or molecule inside. Known transformations conversion product C60 containing endohedral species. As well as providing improved synthesis large quantities 4He@C60, H2@C60, D2@C60, method allows efficient incorporation expensive such HD 3He, prepare HD@C60 3He@C60. The also enables first Ne@C60 molecular surgery, its characterization crystallography 13C NMR spectroscopy.

Preparation of new types of trisubstituted oxazoles is realized via chemoselective O-acylations and intramolecular Wittig reactions with ester functionalities using in situ formed phosphorus ylides as key intermediates. A plausible reaction mechanism for this undiscovered chemistry is also proposed based on the existence of expected and rearranged isomeric oxazoles.

A key intermediate, difluoromethylene phosphobetaine, in the Wittig reaction of ClCF2CO2Na-Ph3P with aldehydes was synthesized and characterized, which confirmed the reaction mechanism. The decarboxylation of this stable intermediate was a convenient approach for Wittig difluroolefination. Its reactivity could be adjusted by the modification of the substituent on the phosphorus.
