چکیده

Abstract We present a high-flux source of cold ytterbium atoms that is robust, lightweight and low-maintenance. Our apparatus delivers 1 × 10 9 s −1 into 3D magneto-optical trap without requiring water cooling or high current power supplies. achieve this by employing Zeeman slower 2D fully based on permanent magnets in Halbach configurations. This strategy minimizes mechanical complexity, stray magnetic fields, heat production while little to no maintenance, making it applicable both embedded systems seek minimize electrical consumption, large scale experiments reduce the complexity their subsystems.

Photoassociation spectroscopy of laser-cooled ytterbium atoms.

We report the photoassociation spectroscopy of laser-cooled ytterbium atoms in an optical trap. We observed more than 90 photoassociation resonances of vibrational levels in the (1)Sigma(+)(u) state, including 80 consecutive series, up to 490 GHz detuning with respect to the atomic resonance. From the resonance frequencies we derived the atomic radiative lifetime of the (6s6p) 1P1 state to be 5...

High-Flux Monochromatic Electron and Ion Beams from Laser Cooled Atoms

Sources of inherently cold electrons and ions have undergone rapid development in the past few years. These sources are based upon near-threshold ionization of laser cooled atoms, and show great promise for the creation of high-brightness ion beams, in particular, for use in focused ion beam systems [1, 2], as well as the creation of electron bunches suitable for ultrafast electron diffraction ...

High flux source of cold rubidium atoms

We report on the production of a continuous, slow, and cold beam of Rb atoms with an extremely high flux of 3.2 1012 atoms/s, a transverse temperature of 3 mK, and a longitudinal temperature of 90 mK. We describe the apparatus created to generate the atom beam. Hot atoms are emitted from a rubidium candlestick atomic beam source and transversely cooled and collimated by a 20 cm long atomic coll...

Cold electron sources using laser-cooled atoms

Since the first observation of electron diffraction in 1927, electrons have been used to probe the structure of matter. High-brightness sources of thermal electrons have recently emerged that are capable of simultaneously providing high spatial resolving power along with ultrafast temporal resolution, however they are yet to demonstrate the holy grail of singleshot diffraction of non-crystallin...

Lattice interferometer for laser-cooled atoms.

We demonstrate an atom interferometer in which atoms are laser cooled into a 1D optical lattice, suddenly released, and later subjected to a pulsed optical lattice. For short pulses, a simple analytical theory predicts the signal. We investigate both short and longer pulses where the analytical theory fails. Longer pulses yield higher precision and larger signals, and we observe a coherent sign...
