A robust energy policy review of selected African countries: An impetus for energy sustainability in Nigeria

Abstract Power rationing has become the bane of Nigerian power sector, plunging nation into prolonged periods darkness and costing about 2.5 percent her GDP annually. Although, installed generating capacity is almost 13 GW, situation worsened by an overdependence on thermal hydro generation, high losses, a poor tariff structure. In face these challenges, Nigeria seeks to achieve universal access 2030 with sustainable having share 30 per cent in energy mix. Despite existence frameworks supporting this target, Nigeria’s policies are still weak; indicated low Regulatory Indicator for Sustainable Energy (RISE) score 30. To reach fulfil SDG 7; needs right mix policies. This study aims review, draw lessons from successful unsuccessful implementation similar five countries give recommendations.
