A retrospective analysis on mucormycosis in patients with hematological diseases: a single center experience from Turkey

Aim: Mucormycosis is an acute, invasive, devastating and highly fatal fungal infection, affecting particularly immunocompromised patients; fortunately, it rare. This study aimed to describe the attitude of mucormycosis in patients with a hematological disease, evaluate risk factors associated mortality.
 Material Method: We retrospectively assessed demographic clinical data who were diagnosed Erciyes University Hematology Bone Marrow Transplantation Center, between 2010 2020. The was included 34 history either malignancy or hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. 
 Results: Twenty-seven had proven others possible infection. most frequent underlying disease acute leukemia. Seven-teen allogeneic transplantation, frequency 3.5% among transplant recipients. site infection rhino-orbital region (85.3%). Forty-seven percent presented orbital symptoms. Fifteen on mucor-active antifungal (posaconazole liposomal Amphotericin B) prophylaxis treatment at time diagnosis. All received B seven posaconazole additionally as initial therapy. Surgical debridement performed 91.1% patients. two-year mucor-related mortality rate 44.1%. survival curves significantly lower concomitant pneumonia, transplantation also receiving drugs diagnosis.
 Conclusion: remains significant problem for hematology clinicians despite expanding use prophylaxis. Moreover, breakthrough infections indicate rising danger regarding resistant agents. highlight that, broad-spectrum are more fragile complicated patients, which put them increased baseline mucormycosis, deserve attention.
