A regionally resolved inventory of High Mountain Asia surge-type glaciers, derived from a multi-factor remote sensing approach

Abstract. Knowledge about the occurrence and characteristics of surge-type glaciers is crucial due to impact surging on glacier melt glacier-related hazards. One super-clusters High Mountain Asia (HMA). However, no consistent region-wide inventory in HMA exists. We present a regionally resolved based their behaviour across between 2000 2018. identify from surface velocity, elevation feature change patterns using multi-factor remote sensing approach that combines yearly ITS_LIVE velocity data, DEM differences very-high-resolution imagery (Bing Maps, Google Earth). Out ?95 000 HMA, we identified 666 show diagnostic 2018, which are mainly found Karakoram (223) Pamir regions (223). The total area covered by represents 19.5 % glacierized Randolph Glacier Inventory (RGI) V6.0 polygons HMA. Only 68 were already as “surge type” RGI V6.0. further validate 107 previously labelled “probably surge newly 491 glaciers, not reported other inventories covering finally discuss possibility self-organized criticality surges. Across all surge-affected within complexes displays significant power law dependency with length.
