A rare cause of dysphagia due to retropharyngeal foregut duplication cyst: case report and review of the literature

Abstract Background The retropharyngeal space is a deep compartment of the head and neck region which extends from base skull to mediastinum, between posterior pharyngeal wall vertebral muscles, delimited laterally by carotid sheaths. Pathological processes are rarely encountered, generally isolated painless masses often cystic, they usually originate branchial arch anomalies, but only in rare cases, turn out be foregut duplication cysts. Foregut cyst congenital malformations arising along primitively derived alimentary tract during first trimester developing embryo, mostly seen thorax abdomen, with just few cases reported region. We report an extremely case lined respiratory epithelium located space, at level oropharynx, adult patient dysphagia surgically treated, we also made analysis published literature about this very uncommon condition. Case presentation A 63-year-old male chronic was diagnosed cystic lesion, treated. Final pathologic evaluation confirmed diagnosis epithelium. review pertaining cysts made, particular emphasis on ones. Conclusions Retropharyngeal neck. Clinical symptoms such as dyspnea should evaluated fibrolaryngoscopy, CT MRI scans great significance for definitive diagnosis, include possibility differential diagnosis. Surgical excision elective treatment order prevent complications including infection compression or eventually malignant transformation.
