Vesicular Stomatitis Virus G Protein by Swainsonine
Swainsonine, an inhibitor of glycoprotein processing, inhibits the formation of the normal oligosaccharide chain of the G protein of vesicular stomatitis virus. Thus, when vesicular stomatitis virus was grown in baby hamster kidney cells in the presence of swainsonine (15 to 500 ng/ml) and labeled with [2-3H]mannose, the oligosaccharide portion of the G protein was completely susceptible to the...
متن کاملhsp70-dependent antiviral immunity against cytopathic neuronal infection by vesicular stomatitis virus.
The major inducible 70-kDa heat shock protein (hsp70) protects against measles virus (MeV) neurovirulence in the mouse that is caused by a cell-associated noncytolytic neuronal infection. Protection is type I interferon (IFN) dependent, and we have established a novel axis of antiviral immunity in which hsp70 is released from virus-infected neurons to induce IFN-β in macrophages. The present wo...

Defective particles were the major product after undiluted passage of certain temperature-sensitive (ts) mutants of the Indiana C strain of vesicular stomatitis virus in BHK-21 cells at the permissive temperature (31 C). Essentially homogeneous preparations of defective particles were obtained with the wild-type and individual ts mutants. The defective particles associated with some of the ts m...
متن کاملInhibition of a vesicular stomatitis virus mutant by rifampin.
Rifampin reversibly inhibits the intracellular replication of a VSV mutant, whereas a revertant variant selected from this viral population, as well as the wild strain, are not affected by this drug. Rifampin inhibits transcriptase activity of the sensitive mutant only and, consequently, total viral RNA synthesis decreases significantly in the cells.
متن کاملSpecimens from a vesicular lesion caused by molluscum contagiosum virus produced a cytopathic effect in cell culture that mimicked that produced by herpes simplex virus.
Infection with molluscum contagiosum virus, a poxvirus, normally has a typical clinical presentation; therefore, laboratory confirmation is infrequently sought and the virus is rarely isolated in culture. As reported herein, viral culture of specimens from atypical lesions may produce an abortive infection in limited cell lines and a cytopathic effect suggestive of herpes simplex virus.
