A Physical and Behavioral Barrier for Enhancing Fish Downstream Migration at Hydropower Dams: The Flexible FishProtector

Fish protection at hydropower plants is important for the sustainability of hosting ecosystems and acceptance hydropower. On their way downstream, fish are exposed to various related negative effects, ranging from a delay in downstream movement being injured or killed by turbine. Understanding behavior close proximity devices essential order establish efficient facilities. In this study, physical (horizontal steel cables) behavioral barriers (electric field) were developed (Flexible FishProtector) effectiveness was investigated. The brown trout (Salmo trutta fario), rainbow (Oncorhynchus mykiss), grayling (Thymallus thymallus) chub (Squalius cephalus) Flexible FishProtector analyzed using video evaluation. experimental setup non-scaled section model runoff river power plant. used electric field induced flight reaction corresponding distance that significantly increased rate. Furthermore, an increase guiding efficiency achieved with use as well barrier, supporting safe migration narrower cable clearance (30 mm versus 60 mm).
