A performance comparison of the fully automated urine particle analyzer UF-5000 with UF-1000i and Gram staining in predicting bacterial growth patterns in women with uncomplicated urinary tract infections

Abstract Background The aim of this study was to compare the performance new flow cytometer UF-5000 with UF-1000i and Gram staining for determining bacterial patterns in urine samples. Methods Women who attended our clinic symptoms suggestive urinary tract infection were enrolled study. Mid-stream samples collected gram staining, analysis cultures. Bacterial classified using (none, cocci bacteria or rods/mixed growth), cocci, rods mixed growth) staining. Results Among 102 included samples, there 10 g-positive 2 bacilli, 66 g-negative rods, 24 growth. sensitivity/specificity 81.8/91.1% gram-negative 23.5/96.9% cocci/mixed. 80.0/88.2% negative 70.0/86.5% gram-positive cocci. Conclusions demonstrated good sensitivity specificity Gram-negative bacilli an improved detecting Gram-positive compared UF-1000i.

Unsatisfactory performance of flow cytometer UF-100 and urine strips in predicting outcome of urine cultures.

UF-100 flow cytometer and urine strip results were cross-interpreted to predict culture outcomes. The best negative predictive value was obtained with bacteria at > or =1,000/microl, white blood cells at > or =20/microl, or leukocyte esterase positivity. Nine of 24 false negatives were clinically significant. Thus, UF-100 and urine strip results do not accurately predict the outcome of cultures.
