A novel tricationic fullerene C60 as broad-spectrum antimicrobial photosensitizer: mechanisms of action and potentiation with potassium iodide

چکیده
A novel amphiphilic photosensitizing agent based on a tricationic fullerene C60 (DMC603+) was efficiently synthesized from its non-charged analogue MMC60. These fullerenes presented strong UV absorptions, with broad range of less intense absorption up to 710 nm. Both compounds showed low fluorescence emission and were able photosensitize the production reactive oxygen species. Furthermore, photodecomposition l-tryptophan sensitized by both indicated an involvement type II pathway. DMC603+ effective produce photodynamic inactivation (PDI) Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli Candida albicans. Mechanistic insight that action mainly mediated photoprocesses in bacteria, while greater preponderance pathway found C. In presence potassium iodide, potentiation PDI observed due formation iodine Therefore, can be used as potential broad-spectrum antimicrobial photosensitizer.

Possible Mechanisms of Fullerene C60 Antioxidant Action
Novel mechanism of antioxidant activity of buckminsterfullerene C₆₀ based on protons absorbing and mild uncoupling of mitochondrial respiration and phosphorylation was postulated. In the present study we confirm this hypothesis using computer modeling based on Density Functional Theory. Fullerene's geroprotective activity is sufficiently higher than those of the most powerful reactive oxygen sp...
متن کاملLight as a Broad-Spectrum Antimicrobial
Antimicrobial resistance is a significant and growing concern. To continue to treat even simple infections, there is a pressing need for new alternative and complementary approaches to antimicrobial therapy. One possible addition to the current range of treatments is the use of narrow-wavelength light as an antimicrobial, which has been shown to eliminate a range of common pathogens. Much progr...
متن کاملBroad-Spectrum Antimicrobial Effects of Photocatalysis Using Titanium Dioxide Nanoparticles Are Strongly Potentiated by Addition of Potassium Iodide.
Photocatalysis describes the excitation of titanium dioxide nanoparticles (a wide-band gap semiconductor) by UVA light to produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) that can destroy many organic molecules. This photocatalysis process is used for environmental remediation, while antimicrobial photocatalysis can kill many classes of microorganisms and can be used to sterilize water and surfaces and po...
متن کاملNovel α-MSH Peptide Analogues with Broad Spectrum Antimicrobial Activity
Previous investigations indicate that α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH) and certain synthetic analogues of it exert antimicrobial effects against bacteria and yeasts. However, these molecules have weak activity in standard microbiology conditions and this hampers a realistic clinical use. The aim in the present study was to identify novel peptides with broad-spectrum antimicrobial activi...

Viral diseases are of immense importance considering the extensive damage and severe losses they cause to the crops. Because of their peculiar nature and characteristic association with hosts and vectors, no therapeutic method to completely control them has been found successful. However, certain preventive measures, if adopted suitably can be of great help in avoiding viral diseases. Antiviral...
