A Novel Suspended-Sediment Sampling Method: Depth-Integrated Grab (DIG)
نویسندگان
چکیده
Measuring suspended sediment in fluvial systems is critical to understanding and managing water resources. Sampling has been the primary means of sediment. Specialized samplers, sampling methods, laboratory methods developed by select U.S. Federal Agencies are more representative river stream conditions than commonly used grab total solids (TSS) but not widely because they expensive, time consuming, required as part quality standards United States. A new suspended-sediment method called a depth-integrated (DIG) was combining certain elements from both depth-integrating concentration (SSC) methods. The goal DIG provide accurate results Grab-TSS while being easier cheaper sample specialized samplers Approximately 50 paired comparison samples were collected at 9 sites Minnesota 2018 through 2019. Results showed no significant difference between method. DIG-SSC provided an improved alternative method, additional research testing important evaluate if this appropriate different observed study.

Systematic Sampling for Suspended Sediment
Because of high costs or complex logistics, scientific populations cannot be measured entirely and must be sampled. Accepted scientific practice holds that sample selection be based on statistical principles to assure objectivity when estimating totals and variances. Probability sampling--obtaining samples with known probabilities--is the only method that assures these results. However, probabi...
متن کاملMonitoring baseline suspended sediment in forested basins: the effects of sampling on suspended sediment rating curves
Rating curves are widely used for directly assessing changes in the suspended sediment delivery process and indirectly for estimating total yields. Four sampling methods were simulated over a 31-day record of suspended sediment from the North Fork of the Mad River near Korbel, California. The position and size of the four groups of plotted slope/intercept pairs indicated differences in bias and...
متن کاملAppraisal of a simple sampling device for collecting time-integrated fluvial suspended sediment samples
Geochemical analysis of suspended sediment is a key requirement in nutrient and contaminant transfer studies, but the collection of fluvial suspended sediment samples is problematic due to the highly episodic nature of its transport. Traditional approaches involve the collection of instantaneous samples, but uncertainties regarding intraand inter-storm variations in sedi ment-associated nutrie...
متن کاملDetection of Suspended Sediment Effect on Sidescan Sonar Imagery Using the Navy’s CASS-GRAB Model
Sidescan sonar detects objects buried in the seafloor through generating images of ordnance such as seamine buried in sediments. The sonar operates by illuminating a broad swath of the seabed using a line array of acoustic projectors while acoustic backscattering from the illuminated sediment volume is measured. The effect of suspended sediment on the sonar imagery depends on the volume scatter...
متن کاملTurbidity Threshold Sampling for Suspended Sediment Load Estimation
Abstract: The paper discusses an automated procedure for measuring turbidity and sampling suspended sediment. The basic equipment consists of a programmable data logger, an in situ turbidimeter, a pumping sampler, and a stage-measuring device. The data logger program employs turbidity to govern sample collection during each transport event. Mounting configurations and housings for the turbidime...
