An Improved Selective Culture Medium Enhances the Isolation of Burkholderia pseudomallei from Contaminated Specimens
Burkholderia pseudomallei is a Gram-negative environmental bacterium found in tropical climates that causes melioidosis. Culture remains the diagnostic gold standard, but isolation of B. pseudomallei from heavily contaminated sites, such as fecal specimens, can be difficult. We recently reported that B. pseudomallei is capable of infecting the gastrointestinal tract of mice and suggested that t...
متن کاملSelective medium for the isolation of streptococci from clinical specimens.
Incorporating neomycin and nalidixic acid into a blood-agar base resulted in a medium highly selective for beta-hemolytic streptococci under conditions in which detection of streptococcal colonies by conventional means would have been very difficult.

In the UK the disease was 7 eradicated from horses and other equids in 1928 and is now rarely reported 8 throughout the world. Freedom from disease is maintained in part by serological 9 screening prior to international travel. Serological testing is usu...
متن کاملNovel selective medium for isolation of Staphylococcus lugdunensis from wound specimens.
We compared a novel selective Staphylococcus lugdunensis (SSL) medium with routine media (blood and chocolate agars) for the detection of S. lugdunensis in 990 clinical specimens (from tissue, pus, or wound swabs). Significantly more S. lugdunensis isolates were detected on SSL medium (34/990) than on routine medium (7/990) (P = 0.001, McNemar's test).
متن کاملIsolation of mycobacteria from undecontaminated specimens with selective 7H10 medium.
Media containing antimicrobial agents have been formulated for use as an adjunct to the standard media in an effort to reduce contamination and improve isolation of mycobacteria from clinical specimens. Selective 7H10 (S7H10) was developed for use in the isolation of mycobacteria from undecontaminated material. During a 33-month period, 10,782 clinical specimens were cultured in parallel on S7H...
