A novel and multifunctional flame retardant nucleating agent towards superior fire safety and crystallization properties for biodegradable poly (lactic acid)

• A multifunctional additive (PDPO) was successfully synthesized. PDPO enhanced the flame retardancy and crystallization rate of PLA. effectively exerted inhibitory effect in vapor phase. PLA/PDPO biocomposites maintained satisfying mechanical properties. In engineering application area, it has always been a challenge to simultaneously improve flame-retardant performance polylactic acid (PLA) biomaterials, thus restricting their extensive application. this work, (4,4?-(phenylphosphoryl)bis(piperazine-4,1-diyl))bis(diphenylphosphine oxide) synthesized used fabricate retardant PLA biocomposites. The behavior, fire safety, properties mechanisms were studied detail. results indicated that notably improved crystallinity When 4 wt% incorporated, passed UL-94V-0 grade LOI values from 19.0% pure 29.4%. introduction promoted premature degradation carbonization substrate, inhibited transesterification during thermal pyrolysis process. Besides, decomposed produced Ph PO , which efficiently free radical trapping Therefore, spread for declined even self-extinguished. Meanwhile, low addition presented little on composites. This showed broad prospects emerging fields such as electronic devices, automobiles, 3D printing materials.
