Computing Equilibrium Free Energies Using Non-Equilibrium Molecular Dynamics
As shown by Jarzynski, free energy differences between equilibrium states can be expressed in terms of the statistics of work carried out on a system during non-equilibrium transformations. This exact result, as well as the related Crooks fluctuation theorem, provide the basis for the computation of free energy differences from fast switching molecular dynamics simulations, in which an external...
متن کاملNon-equilibrium Work Relations
This is a brief review of recently derived relations describing the behaviour of systems far from equilibrium. They include the Fluctuation Theorem, Jarzynski’s and Crooks’ equalities, and an extended form of the Second Principle for general steady states. They are very general and their proofs are, in most cases, disconcertingly simple.
متن کاملEquilibrium Free Energies from Nonequilibrium Processes *
A recent result, relating the (irreversible) work performed on a system during a non-quasistatic process, to the Helmholtz free energy difference between two equilibrium states of the system, is discussed. A proof of this result is given for the special case when the evolution of the system in question is modelled by a Langevin equation in configuration space. My purpose in this talk is to pres...
متن کاملA nonequilibrium method for the estimation of equilibrium free energies without work measurement
Recent developments in nonequilibrium statistical mechanics have shown the existence of exact and remarkably simple equalities relating equilibrium free energies and work measurements in a class of nonequilibrium processes, in which the reaction coordinate is dynamically driven between configurations of interest by some external agent [1, 2, 3]. In the present contribution, a different type of ...
متن کاملThermal Fluctuations in Non-Equilibrium Thermodynamics
Thermal fluctuations in fluids and fluid mixtures in stationary nonequilibrium states are spatially long ranged. This long-ranged nature of the non-equilibrium fluctuations is caused by a coupling between hydrodynamic modes through the non-equilibrium fluxes or gradients. The phenomena are discussed with some illustrative examples in fluids and fluid mixtures.
