A millikelvin scanning tunneling microscope in ultra-high vacuum with adiabatic demagnetization refrigeration

We present the design and performance of an ultra-high vacuum (UHV) scanning tunneling microscope (STM) that uses adiabatic demagnetization electron magnetic moments for controlling its operating temperature in range between 30 mK 1 K with accuracy up to 7 $\mu$K. The time available STM experiments at 50 is longer than 20 h, 100 about 40 h. single-shot refrigerator (ADR) can be regenerated automatically within hours while keeping below 5 K. whole setup located a vibrationally isolated, electromagnetically shielded laboratory no mechanical pumping lines penetrating through isolation walls. 1K pot ADR cryostat operated silently more days mode using custom-built high-capacity cryopump. A high degree vibrational decoupling together use specially-designed minimalistic head provides outstanding stability, demonstrated by current noise, imaging, spectroscopy measurements all performed on atomically clean Al(100) surface.
