A Methodology to Qualitatively Select Upcycled Building Materials from Urban and Industrial Waste

The rising concern about climate change and other challenges faced by the planet led society to look for different design solutions approaches towards a more balanced relationship between built natural environment. circular economy is an effective alternative linear economic model inspired metabolisms use of resources. This research explores how innovative strategies can be integrated evaluating local urban industrial wastes into sustainable building materials. A literature review conducted focusing on strategies, re-use, recycle, waste transformation processes. Then, methodology selection upcycled re-used materials developed based Ashby’s method. total thirty-five types partition walls, which include plastic, wood, paper, steel, aluminium, agricultural wastes, are evaluated using multi-criteria decision aid (M-MACBETH). Among these solutions, ten walls show high-performance thermal sound isolation, fourteen coating, two exhibit structural reliability. Regardless their functional limitations, proposed bear great potential within construction industry.
