A Meta-Analysis of Hippocampal and Amygdala Volumes in Patients Diagnosed With Dissociative Identity Disorder

چکیده

Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), an illness characterized by multiple personality states, has long been a controversial diagnosis within the psychiatric community. Demonstrating neuroanatomical basis for disorder may help to resolve controversy. Current literature on neuroanatomy associated with DID focused hippocampus and amygdala are inconclusive. This meta-analysis pools results from n = 3 studies compare mean size of these two structures between patients, non-DID healthy controls. Patients diagnosed both & PTSD were found have smaller hippocampi bilaterally (p< .001) compared controls; no significant difference was seen in amygdala. When comparing left .001), trend right (p .06). A comparison not possible due lack data. These findings suggest that is patients beyond what PTSD, provides evidence memory impairment often (i.e., amnesia experienced host alters), presents potentially novel means understand this disorder.

OBJECTIVE Smaller hippocampal volume has been reported in several stress-related psychiatric disorders, including posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), borderline personality disorder with early abuse, and depression with early abuse. Patients with borderline personality disorder and early abuse have also been found to have smaller amygdalar volume. The authors examined hippocampal and amygdala...

Inter-Identity Autobiographical Amnesia in Patients with Dissociative Identity Disorder

BACKGROUND A major symptom of Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID; formerly Multiple Personality Disorder) is dissociative amnesia, the inability to recall important personal information. Only two case studies have directly addressed autobiographical memory in DID. Both provided evidence suggestive of dissociative amnesia. The aim of the current study was to objectively assess transfer of autob...

The Use of Emdr in Patients with Dissociative Identity Disorder

Hyperarousal during trauma inhibits the integration of memory. In DID, memory is further disrupted when alter personalities coalesce around individual memory fragments and either reenact conflicts or disown them. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an innovative psychotherapeutic method which accelerates information processing and facilitates the integration of fragmented tr...

Axis-I comorbidity in female patients with dissociative identity disorder and dissociative identity disorder not otherwise specified.

The aim of this study was to investigate axis-I comorbidity in patients with dissociative identity disorder (DID) and dissociative disorder not otherwise specified (DDNOS). Using the Diagnostic Interview for Psychiatric Disorders, results from patients with DID (n = 44) and DDNOS (n = 22) were compared with those of patients with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) (n = 13), other anxiety diso...
