چکیده
Abstract Despite their importance for regional water resource planning and as indicators of climate change, records in situ glacier mass balance remain short spatially sparse the Himalaya. Here, we present an updated series mass-balance measurements from Rikha Samba Glacier, Nepal, between 2011 2021. The is −0.39 ± 0.32 m w.e. this period. We use energy-mass model to extend annual back 1974. forced using daily meteorological variables ERA5-Land reanalysis data that linearly bias-corrected observations automatic weather station situated near terminus. modeled consistent with measured 2011–2021 previous glaciological geodetic estimates. results indicate a −0.56 0.27 −1 over reconstruction period 1974–2021, which comparable losses experienced by other Himalayan glaciers during time. An assessment sensitivity forcing suggests change temperature ±1 K has stronger effect on calculated compared ±20% either precipitation, or relative humidity, solar radiation.

South Cascade Glacier mass balance , 1935 – 2006
A simple model uses daily observations of precipitation and temperature at a nearby weather station to estimate glacier-average seasonal mass-balance components at South Cascade Glacier, Washington, USA, from 1935, 24 years before measurements began at the glacier. This is 13 years earlier than measurements that can be derived using the NCEP–NCAR reanalysis database (begins 1 January 1948). Alt...
متن کاملBrief Communication: Contending estimates of 2003–2008 glacier mass balance over the Pamir–Karakoram–Himalaya
We present glacier thickness changes over the entire Pamir–Karakoram–Himalaya arc based on ICESat satellite altimetry data for 2003–2008. We highlight the importance of C-band penetration for studies based on the SRTM elevation model. This penetration seems to be of potentially larger magnitude and variability than previously assumed. The most negative rate of region-wide glacier elevation chan...
متن کاملA time constant for hemispheric glacier mass balance
The notion is developed of a mass-balance time constant applicable to the Northern Hemispheric glacier inventory taken as a whole. Ice dynamics are incorporated only implicitly in its estimation, which follows directly from a consideration of observed mass-balance and hemispheric temperature time series. While such a parameter must certainly be related to the rate at which glacier hypsometry ad...
متن کاملAnnual Mass Balance of Blue Glacier, USA: 1955-97
Mass changes of Blue Glacier, USA are calculated from topographic maps made from vertical aerial photography in late summer of 1939, 1952, 1957, and 1987, along with laser altimetry flown in June 1996. Changes in elevation between maps were adjusted for seasonal variations in the snow cover, and to account for the ablation between the date of photography and 1 October. Topography obtained from ...
متن کاملInterannual to Decadal Variability in Climate and the Glacier Mass Balance in Washington, Western Canada, and Alaska*
The authors examine the net winter, summer, and annual mass balance of six glaciers along the northwest coast of North America, extending from Washington State to Alaska. The net winter (NWB) and net annual (NAB) mass balance anomalies for the maritime glaciers in the southern group, located in Washington and British Columbia, are shown to be positively correlated with local precipitation anoma...
