‘A long meandering slide’: Feminist critique, genderqueerness, sexual agency and Crip subjectivity in Stephen Dwoskin’s late works

Stephen Dwoskin was a prolific experimental filmmaker from the mid-1960s until his death in 2012. Commonly associated with New York underground film scene and London Filmmakers’ Co-Op, which he co-founded 1966, Jewish-American also childhood survivor of polio disability rights activist. Though an enduring oral legacy feminist criticism Dwoskin’s work remains since 1980s, later 1990s 2000s is acutely understudied. In this article, I recontextualize earlier positions light ‘cripping’ sexuality gender proposed by recent critical studies, applied to two works. Adopting archival evidence critique, art histories Crip approaches sexuality, examine androgyny genderqueerness photomontages Ha, Ha! La Solution Imaginaire (1993) conflations medical BDSM-structured care Intoxicated My Illness (2001). conclude that invites rich epistemological re-evaluation both critique entrenched sociocultural conceptions gendered subjectivity, intimacy sexual agency.
