A Logic for Aristotle's Modal Syllogistic

چکیده

We propose a new modal logic endowed with simple deductive system to interpret Aristotle's theory of the syllogism. While being inspired by standard propositional logic, it is also terms that admits (sound) extensional semantics involving possible states-of-affairs in given world. Applied analysis syllogistic as found Prior Analytics A8-22, sheds light on various fine-grained distinctions which when made allow us clarify some ambiguities and obtain completely consistent prove all syllogisms considered valid Aristotle. This allows make connection axioms modern perceive what extent these are implicit reasoning. Further work will involve addressing question completeness this (or variants thereof) together an extension include calculus relations (for instance relational treated Galen's Introduction Logic) Slomkowsky has argued already Topics.

On the satisfiability problem for a 4-level quantified syllogistic and some applications to modal logic

We introduce a multi-sorted stratified syllogistic, called 4LQS, admitting variables of four sorts and a restricted form of quantification over variables of the first three sorts, and prove that it has a solvable satisfiability problem by showing that it enjoys a small model property. Then, we consider the fragments (4LQS) of 4LQS, consisting of 4LQS-formulae whose quantifier prefixes have leng...

A Reconstruction of Aristotle’s Modal Syllogistic

Ever since Łukasiewicz, it has been opinio communis that Aristotle’s modal syllogistic is incomprehensible due to its many faults and inconsistencies, and that there is no hope of finding a single consistent formal model for it. The aim of this paper is to disprove these claims by giving such a model. My main points shall be, first, that Aristotle’s syllogistic is a pure term logic that does no...

Syllogistic Logic with Complements

This paper continues the development of complete fragments of natural language by adding a noun-level complement operator to the basic syllogistic language of All X are Y and Some X are Y : in the fragment of this paper we can also say, for example, Some non-X are Y . We axiomatize this logic of this fragment in two ways: in a direct fashion, allowing the inference of an arbitrary sentence from...

Toward Probabilistic Natural Logic for Syllogistic Reasoning

Natural language contains an abundance of reasoning patterns. Historically, there have been many attempts to capture their rational usage in normative systems of logical rules. However, empirical studies have repeatedly shown that human inference differs from what is characterized by logical validity. In order to better characterize the patterns of human reasoning, psychologists have proposed a...

Syllogistic Logic with Comparative Adjectives

This paper adds comparative adjectives to the known systems of syllogistic logic. The comparatives are interpreted by transitive and irreflexive relations. The main point is to obtain sound and complete axiomatizations of the logics.
