A High Resolution, Three‐Dimensional View of the D‐28 Calving Event From Amery Ice Shelf With ICESat‐2 and Satellite Imagery

چکیده

Tabular calving events occur from Antarctica's large ice shelves only every few decades, and are preceded by rift propagation. We used high-resolution imagery ICESat-2 data to determine the propagation rates for three active rifts on Amery Ice Shelf (AIS; T1, T2, E3) observe of D-28 September 25, 2019 along T1. AIS front advance accelerated downstream T1 in years before calving, possibly increasing stress at tip. experienced significant acceleration 12 days coinciding with a jump E3. ICESat-2's high resolution repeat acquisitions 91 allowed analysis after detection where it was not visible as ∼1 m surface depression, suggesting that propagates basal fracture. Our results show can provide process-scale information about iceberg calving.

Systems Analysis of complex glaciological processes and application to calving of Amery Ice Shelf, East Antarctica

Calving is a complex process subject to several cooperating atmospheric, oceanographic and glaciological forcings that vary in space and time, and whose relative effects are challenging to separate. Statistical ‘Systems Analysis’ is commonly used in engineering and economics to extricate complex ‘force–response’ relationships. Here we apply Systems Analysis to the Amery rift system, East Antarc...

Ice loss processes in the Seal Nunataks ice shelf region from satellite altimetry and imagery

The Seal Nunataks ice shelf (SNIS, ∼743 km in 2013) is an unofficial name for a remnant area between the former Larsen A and Larsen B ice shelves off the northeastern Antarctic Peninsula. Analyses using Landsat 7 ETM+ and Terra ASTER images from 2001 to 13 and ICESat altimetry from 2003 to 09 show it has retreated and thinned following the Larsen A (1995) and Larsen B (2002) disintegrations. De...

Ambient noise correlation on the Amery Ice Shelf, East Antarctica

S U M M A R Y The structure of ice shelves is important for modelling the dynamics of ice flux from the continents to the oceans. While other, more traditional techniques provide many constraints, passive imaging with seismic noise is a complementary tool for studying and monitoring ice shelves. As a proof of concept, here we study noise cross-correlations and autocorrelations on the Amery Ice ...

The ‘view from nowhere’? Spatial politics and cultural significance of high-resolution satellite imagery

This themed issue focuses on the cultural meanings and spatial politics of high-resolution satellite imagery, critically examining how the burgeoning use of these data is radically reshaping the ways different groups comprehend space and place. Orbiting high overhead are a scatter of small, but very costly, satellites designed to produce streams of visual spatial representations of the ground b...

Calving of large tabular icebergs from ice shelf rift systems

[1] We used Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar to study the detachment process that allowed two large icebergs to calve from the Ross Ice Shelf, Antarctica. Time series of rift geometries indicate that rift widths increased steadily, whereas rift lengths increased episodically through several discrete rift-tip propagation events. We also conducted modeling experiments constrained by the o...
