A GIS-MCDA Approach Addressing Economic-Social-Environmental Concerns for Selecting the Most Suitable Compressed Air Energy Storage Reservoirs

This article presents an assessment of the most suitable compressed air energy storage (CAES) reservoirs and facilities to better integrate renewable into electricity grid. The novelty this study resides in selecting best CAES reservoir sites through application a multi-criteria decision aid (MCDA) tool, specifically simple additive weighting (SAW) method. Besides using geographic information systems (GIS) spatial representation potential areas, for MCDA method, several criteria, environmental social constraints, positive incentives (e.g., proximity existing power generation sources) were contemplated. As result, sixty-two alternatives or identified, thirteen criteria (seven constraints six incentives) considered. final stage consisted conducting sensitivity analysis determine robustness solutions obtained giving insights regarding each criterion’s influence on selected. three Monte Real salt dome, Sines Massif, Campina de Cima—Loulé mine. results show that GIS-MCDA methodological framework, integrating non-spatial information, proved provide multidimensional view incorporating both incentives.
