چکیده
Abstract The grey squirrel ( Sciurus carolinensis ) is an invasive rodent in Ireland that has had detrimental impacts on the native Irish red S. vulgaris as well silviculture. This species spread rapidly throughout Ireland, but recent years appears to be declining certain areas of country. study analysed genetic profile populations gain insight into their introduction, evolutionary history and vulnerability management strategies. diversity population structure eight was assessed using 11 species-specific microsatellite loci, compared a small from Tennessee, U.S.A., part range squirrel. first time these markers developed specifically for squirrels have been used Ireland. We found low moderate overall across presence inbreeding. One particular, (in Co. Kildare), differentiated all other populations, which could indicate isolation between or secondary introduction

Detection of squirrel poxvirus by nested and real-time PCR from red (Sciurus vulgaris) and grey (Sciurus carolinensis) squirrels
BACKGROUND Squirrel poxvirus (SQPV) is highly pathogenic to red squirrels (Sciurus vulgaris), and is a significant contributing factor to the local extinction of the species in most parts of England and Wales, where infection is endemic in Eastern grey squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) populations. Although a nested PCR assay has been used successfully to study the epidemiology of SQPV, samples h...

The website is maintained by a research unit based at the University of Liverpool that aims to provide information on the ecology and management of invasive species in the United Kingdom. The site provides species descriptions, life history details, range information as well as discussing the impacts and potential control measures of eastern grey squirrels. Eastern grey squirrels were introduce...
متن کاملForaging and feeding behavior of the Eastern Grey Squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis)
The eastern grey squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) is a prime example of scatter hoarding behavior, storing food in small hoards underground. Our research aimed to see how the spatial distribution of food affects the foraging behaviors of S. carolinensis, which is something that has not previously been researched. The experiments lasted from April May 2013 on the University of Maryland, College P...
متن کاملSpread and attempted eradication of the grey squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) in Italy, and consequences for the red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) in Eurasia
In 1997, the National Wildlife Institute, in co-operation with the University of Turin, produced an action plan to eradicate the American grey squirrel from Italy, as this introduced species replaces the native red squirrel through competitive exclusion and damages trees through de-barking. The first step, a trial eradication of a small population of grey squirrels at Racconigi (Turin) to evalu...
