Fragmentation of Very High Energy Heavy Ions

We present experimental results on fragmentation charge-changing cross sections of 158 A GeV lead ions (charge Z = 82e) incident on Cu and CR39 targets. To detect and identify the relativistic ions, the nuclear track detector CR39 was used. When an ion crosses a nuclear track detector foil, it produces damages at the level of molecular bonds, forming the so called “latent track”. During the che...

The Time Expansion Chamber as High Precision Drift Chamber

With the principle of the time expansion chamber and the additional measurement of the position of the avalanche along the circumference of the anode wire it is possible to reconstruct the spatial distribution of the primary ionization in space. A position resolution for minimum ionizing tracks of a 5 30 urn is expected. First tests and concepts for vertex detectors are presented.

The High-density Multiwire Drift Chamber

A multiwire propor t ional chamber , with a high-densi ty drift space at tached, has been developed as a posit ion-sensit ive detector for nonioniz ing radiat ion. A chamber with a 5 g /cm a d r i f t s p a c e , compris ing a l eadb i smuth matr ix o f 1 m m square holes on a 1.5 m m pi tch has been investigated. For 0.66 MeV pho tons a detection efficiency o f 5%, combined with a spatial reso...

A fast algorithm for precise energy-loss calculations of high-energetic heavy ions

Motivated by the need of precise energy-loss predictions to identify heavy reaction products, several computer codes to calculate the energy loss of high-energetic heavy ions are tested. Some of them are found to deviate strongly, in some cases more than 10%, from the available experimental data. A new algorithm is presented which is particularly suited for technical applications. It combines h...
