A Dilemma for Benatar’s Asymmetry Argument

چکیده
Abstract In this paper, I show that David Benatar’s asymmetry argument for anti-natalism leads to a dilemma. Chapter 2 of his book Better Never Have Been , Benatar claims there is an axiological between harms and benefits explains four prevalent asymmetries. Based on the asymmetry, he defends anti-natalist conclusion we should not have children. The asymmetries be explained are moral duties, reasons, attitudes, or feelings concerning life as whole. However, them by applying parts life, such pains pleasures. find serious gap here. While two ways available bridge gap, dilemma arises from argument. supported because it cannot explain asymmetries, else lead conclusion. A number philosophers already criticized argument, mainly questioning its assumptions. contend no good reason agree with even if all explicit assumptions accepted.

Chisholm’s Phenomenal Argument Revisited: a Dilemma for Perdurantism
According to perdurantism, objects persist by being spread out over time just as composite three-dimensional objects are spread out over space. Just as a composite threedimensional object is spread out over space by having spatial parts, objects persist, according to perdurantism, by having temporal parts. Perdurantism can be stated more precisely by saying what exactly a temporal part is. In t...
متن کاملAn argument/adjunct asymmetry in wh-questions
Contra previous uniform approaches for wh-phrases, the current paper argues that there is a clear asymmetry between in-situ argument and adjunct wh-phrases with respect to Intervention Effects (IEs) in Korean and Japanese. Based on the categorical (nominal vs. adverbial) dichotomy evidenced by structural case attachment tests and formation of complex wh-expressions, different base locations for...

Spermatozoa are very special cells and constantly exposed to the interphase between oxidative stress through high amounts of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and leukocytes, and reduction by means of scavengers and antioxidants. Considering the very special functions of spermatozoa as being the only cells with such high polarization and exerting their functions outside the body, even in a differen...
متن کاملA moral dilemma argument against clinical trials of incentives for kidney donation
Commercial transplant tourism results in significant harm to both kidney donors and recipients. However, proponents of incentives for kidney donation assert that proper oversight of the process prevents these harms and also that transplant numbers can be safely increased so that the moral burden of poor end-stage kidney disease outcomes can be alleviated. In a moral dilemma analysis, the princi...
متن کاملOn Argument-Adjunct Asymmetry of Sluicing in Mandarin Chinese
This study attempts to account for the argument-adjunct asymmetry of Sluicing in Mandarin Chinese. Such an asymmetry is empirically demonstrated by a language-particular phenomenon, so-called shi-support, which is also the last resort (Chomsky, 1995a) of our linguistic mechanism. In the current related literature, shi-support is obligatory for wh-arguments but optional for wh-adjuncts (Wang, 20...
