چکیده

The paucity of a comprehensive document on Cameroon’s hazard/disaster risk profile is limitation to the country wide assessment and adequate disaster resilience. This article narrows this gap by retrospectively exploring profile. has been achieved through an investigative approach that applies set qualitative methods derive articulate inventory analysis hazards/disasters in Cameroon. findings indicate Cameroon array high incidence/frequency hazards have had devastating consequences. structured along four profiles: classification all hazard types plaguing into natural, potentially socio-natural, technological, social anthropogenic hazards; occurrence/origin their impacts/effects ‘at risk’ communities/populace potential management or mitigation measures. In-depth natural lowest frequency but cause highest fatalities single incident; socio-natural affect largest number people widest geographical areas, technological occurrence; while social/anthropogenic are newest caused population displacement. Arguably, multi-hazard/disaster presented serves as vital preliminary step more

Risk, Hazard, and Disaster

Natural hazard research began as a study of cultural perceptions to extreme naturally occurring events. Since the advent of the study, natural hazard literature has become steeped in terminology that is sometimes confusing to the reader. The concepts of hazard, risk, and disaster are often confused with one another and with the extreme event itself. Although the extreme event is inherent in haz...

Assessment of desertification hazard, risk and development of management plans

About 80 percent of Iran is arid and semi-arid and about 35 percent of this area is susceptible to desertification hazard. Therefore desertification assessment and identification of the most important criteria for the assessment of risk and a basis for development of management plans is essential. This research was conducted in the semi-arid region of Agh-Band in the Golestan province, Iran wit...

Disaster = Infrastructure + Hazard

We describe a framework for relating available data on hazards to impact on infrastructure. It is designed to be used by simulation platforms that may focus on a single infrastructure layer or aim to study interactions between interdependent layers. The Hazard Impact Framework (HIF) provides a flexible scheme for capturing and maintaining data on the response of elements of critical infrastruct...

Improving resource allocation for disaster operations management in a multi-hazard context

The initial impact of a disaster can lead to a variety of associated hazards. By taking a multi-hazard viewpoint with respect to disaster response and recovery, there is an opportunity to allocate limited resources more effectively, particularly in the context of long-term planning for community sustainability. This working paper introduces an approach for extending quantitative resource alloca...

Hazard Mitigation, Planning, and Disaster Resiliency:

Knowledge about the causes and consequences of hazards is increasing, but losses continue to rise dramatically. We examine the major benefits of land use planning when applied to hazard mitigation, and then discuss why vulnerable communities fail to enact effective planning programs to prevent hazard-induced losses. We then present five sets of choices that communities can make to advance plann...
