A Computational Fluid Dynamics Investigation Comparing the Performance of an Alternative Valvetrain Design Against a Traditional Poppet Valvetrain

Abstract The poppet valve is by far the most widely used in cylinder head design of internal combustion (IC) engines; however, valves themselves create significant flow restrictions during both intake and exhaust strokes, thus causing a reduction volumetric efficiency that affects overall engine performance. By removing restrictive from path air into out allowing to unobstructed, any given IC can achieve greater higher specific output. Vaztec ECOREV rotary system utilizes straight-cut passages reduce such restrictions. This designed be directly driven crankshaft, thereby replacing camshaft altogether. paper will primarily explore differences characteristics between this conventional using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) bench data. Both configurations evaluated on same single-cylinder four-stroke engine. CFD simulations were run at multiple opening positions each configuration for cycles validate process against test data designs. was performed 3D hexahedral meshing steady-state Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) turbulence models. Comparison two include airflow rates as well discharge coefficients field evaluation numerous scalar vector properties.
