A Comparison on Physical and Rheological Properties of Three Different Waste Plastic-Modified Bitumen

This study aims to investigate the effect and possibility of using waste plastic as a sustainable cost-effective polymer modify bitumen binders. Different types have been used in this modification, including polyethylene terephthalate (PET), high-density (HDPE), low-density (LDPE). The modification targets physical characteristics, rheological properties, binders’ resistance ageing. Both long- short-term ageing are investigated determine durability modified binder rolling thin film oven tests (RTFOT) pressure vessels (PAVs). Penetration dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) were conducted evaluate complex modulus, stiffness, elasticity, viscous properties. results show that 2% 4% HDPE LDPE recommended ideal contents for good performance, reflected by penetration before after However, higher contents, such 6% 8% LDPE, not significant improving resistance. Therefore, samples 6–8% more vulnerable permanent deformation. Furthermore, PET exhibits obvious improvements terms with up PET-modified bitumen. Based on results, type content is plastic.
