A Brief History of Broomcorn Millet Cultivation in Lithuania

چکیده

The eastern Baltic region represents the world’s most northerly limit of successful broomcorn millet (Panicum miliaceum) (hereafter, millet) cultivation in past, yet this crop has been almost forgotten today. earliest identified from macrobotanical remains which were directly dated to ca 1000 BCE. Between 800 and 500 BCE, was one major staple foods territory modern-day Lithuania. Millet continued play an important role past agriculture up until 15th century, with its use significantly declining during following centuries. This paper analyses both archaeobotanical records written sources on Lithuania first arrival all way through 19th century. manuscript reviews evidence as documented by historical accounts. In light fluctuating time, we present hypothetical reasons for decline human food. hypothesizes that significant decrease century onwards likely influenced several factors, include climate change (the Little Ice Age) agricultural reforms 16th However, more detailed research is required link fluctuations climatic sources, thus better understanding roots collapsing biodiversity past.

Rainfall Seasonality and the Spread of Millet Cultivation in Eurasia

Broomcorn millet (Panicum miliaceum) was known throughout Eurasia in the second millennium BC in regions with warm, moist summers, where its cultivation reduced agricultural risk. Its cultivation during the warm, but dry months at Kyzyltepa and other Iron Age sites in western Central Asia was probably made possible through irrigation practices that were long known and originally developed in th...

Brief history of mycology in Iran

The history of mycology in Iran is presented in five periods. In the first period (until 1860) there is no sign of Iranian fungi in scientific literature. In the second period (1860–1941) the study of Iranian fungi was started by foreign mycologists who did not visit Iran but worked on plant material collected by botanists. In the third period (1941–1963) the study of Iranian fungi was started ...

Reticulate evolution in Panicum (Poaceae): the origin of tetraploid broomcorn millet, P. miliaceum

Panicum miliaceum (broomcorn millet) is a tetraploid cereal, which was among the first domesticated crops, but is now a minor crop despite its high water use efficiency. The ancestors of this species have not been determined; we aimed to identify likely candidates within the genus, where phylogenies are poorly resolved. Nuclear and chloroplast DNA sequences from P. miliaceum and a range of dipl...

a brief history of zero

it is generally recognised that ‘zero’ as we understand the concept today originated in two geographically separated cultures: the maya and indian. however, if zero merely signified a magnitude or a direction separator (i.e. separating those above the zero level from those below the zero level), the egyptian zero, nfr, dating back at least four thousand years, amply served these purposes. if ze...

Molecular Basis of the Waxy Endosperm Starch Phenotype in Broomcorn Millet (Panicum miliaceum L.)

Waxy varieties of the tetraploid cereal broomcorn millet (Panicum miliaceum L.) have endosperm starch granules lacking detectable amylose. This study investigated the basis of this phenotype using molecular and biochemical methods. Iodine staining of starch granules in 72 plants from 38 landrace accessions found 58 nonwaxy and 14 waxy phenotype plants. All waxy types were in plants from Chinese...
