A brackish to non-marine aquatic and terrestrial fossil assemblage with vertebrates from the lower Coniacian (Upper Cretaceous) Gosau Group of the Tiefengraben locality near St. Wolfgang im Salzkammergut, Austria

The Turonian–Coniacian continental fossil record in Europe is scarce. Here we present a new assemblage of early Coniacian age that was systematically collected from the coal-bearing Gosau Group Tiefengraben locality near St. Wolfgang, Austria. diverse composed at least 60 taxa including sporomorphs and Normapolles-related pollen, seeds leaves angiosperms gymnosperms, charophytes, gastropods, bivalves, ostracods, termites, fishes, crocodiles dinosaurs. Concerning dinosaurs, discovered specimens either extend temporal spatial range specific groups (in some cases as possible relict forms) or suggest occurrence taxa. remains algae, molluscs, calcareous nannofossils lepisosteid fish represent mixed faunal different palaeohabitats, marginal marine to low salinity freshwater terrestrial environments. As angiosperm plants dominate flora with relatively high number dentate leaves, slightly cooler microenvironment compared other Central European localities indicated. characteristically grooved crocodylian teeth differ previously known Upper Cretaceous crocodyliform more fauna region. Dinosaurs are represented by three theropods, largest which referred here basal tetanurans. this great importance for our understanding floristic faunistic composition western Tethyan archipelago during Cenomanian–Campanian gap.
