A Bayesian methodology for localising acoustic emission sources in complex structures

چکیده

In the field of structural health monitoring (SHM), acquisition acoustic emissions to localise damage sources has emerged as a popular approach. Despite recent advances, task locating within composite materials and structures that contain non-trivial geometrical features, still poses significant challenge. Within this paper, Bayesian source localisation strategy is robust these complexities presented. Under new framework, Gaussian process first used learn relationship between locations corresponding difference-in-time-of-arrival values for number sensor pairings. As an emission event with unknown origin observed, mapping then generated quantifies likelihood location across surface structure. The probabilistic offers multiple benefits, leading more informative than deterministic predictions or single-point estimates associated confidence bound. performance approach investigated on structure numerous complex features demonstrates favourable in comparison other similar methods.

Accurate Damage Location in Complex Composite Structures and Industrial Environments using Acoustic Emission

The ability to accurately locate damage in any given structure is a highly desirable attribute for an effective structural health monitoring system and could help to reduce operating costs and improve safety. This becomes a far greater challenge in complex geometries and materials, such as modern composite airframes. The poor translation of promising laboratory based SHM demonstrators to indust...

Accurate Simulation of Acoustic Emission Sources in Composite Plates

Acoustic emission (AE) signals propagate as the extensional and ßexural plate modes in thin composite plates and plate-like geometries such as shells, pipes, and tubes. The relative amplitude of the two modes depends on the directionality of the source motion. For source motions with large out-ofplane components such as delaminations or particle impact, the ßexural or bending plate mode dominat...

A Bayesian Approach to Detection of Small Low Emission Sources

The article addresses the problem of detecting presence and location of a small low emission source inside of an object, when the background noise dominates. This problem arises, for instance, in some homeland security applications. The goal is to reach the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) levels on the order of 10−3. A Bayesian approach to this problem is implemented in 2D. The method allows infere...

Assessment of Crack Activity by Acoustic Emission in Concrete Structures

Concrete and steel are the most widely used major materials for constructing civil structures such as bridges, dam, and buildings. From the acoustic emission (AE) point of view, contrary to steel itself, a lot of AE signals are acquired in concrete itself under service loads whether the crack is active or not. This paper aims to identify the differences of AE event patterns caused by developing...

Damage Detection in Metal Structures Using Acoustic Emission

The structural components of many machines remain in service far beyond their designed lifetimes. This is especially true in the field of aerospace structures, where aircraft, wind turbines, satellites, and other components are expected to be in service for decades. Therefore, a good maintenance system is desired, allowing these structures further service use, while maintaining efficiency and r...
