A 249‐yr chronosequence of forest plots from eight successive fires in the Eastern Canada boreal mixedwoods

چکیده

A combination of wildfires and defoliating insect outbreaks play an important role in the natural successional dynamics North American boreal mixedwood forests, which, long term, change post-disturbance composition structure forest stands. After stand-replacing disturbances (mainly wildfires), early hardwoods typically dominate affected areas. Provided enough time following disturbances, increasing recruitment mid- to late-successional softwoods as well mortality gradually from admixtures hardwood-conifer species conifer-dominated stands mid late stages, respectively. Such mixedwoods are abundant across southern Canadian forest. In Canada, most structurally heterogeneous ecosystems, highly productive, form source timber supply. Here we present EASTERN BOREAL MIXEDWOODS CANADA data set, which documents changes originating eight different representing a chronosequence 249 yr since fire eastern Canada. This set has been used several projects study model influence (e.g., outbreaks) anthropogenic harvesting) on post-fire The covers high range variability stand structure, explained by establishment, dominance, mixture. It thus constitutes useful information trace main tree America, their establishment replacement at spatial scales landscape level). Please cite this paper when publications. Uncertainty in estimating carbon emissions from boreal forest fires

[ I ] The uncertainty in carbon einissions fi-om fire was esti~nated for the boreal region of Alaska over the 50 years of recorded wildfire. Building on previous work where carbon emissions were estimated using a geographic infonnation systems-based model, the uncertainty attached to the different parameters of the basic equation was assessed and propagated through the equation using Monte Carl...

Nitrogen balance along a northern boreal forest fire chronosequence

Fire is a major natural disturbance factor in boreal forests, and the frequency of forest fires is predicted to increase due to climate change. Nitrogen (N) is a key determinant of carbon sequestration in boreal forests because the shortage of N limits tree growth. We studied changes in N pools and fluxes, and the overall N balance across a 155-year non stand-replacing fire chronosequence in su...

SPOT VEGETATION for characterizing boreal forest fires

The potential of the recent SPOT VEGETATION (VGT) sensor for characterizing boreal forest Ž res was investigated. Its capability for hotspot detection and burned area mapping was assessed by analysing a series of VGT, NOAA/AVHRR, and Landsat TM images over a 1541 km2 Ž re that occurred in May 1998, in Alberta, Canada. VGT’s 1.65mm, short-wave infrared (SWIR) channel was capable of detecting the...

Measurement and modelling of bryophyte evaporation in a boreal forest chronosequence

The effects of changing climate and disturbance on forest water cycling are not well understood. In particular, bryophytes contribute significantly to forest evapotranspiration in poorly drained boreal forests, but few studies have directly measured this flux and how it changes with stand age and soil drainage. We measured bryophyte evaporation (E) in the field (in Canadian Picea mariana forest...
