969 The Kara: Working Together Towards Active Inclusion Within Surgery

Abstract Aim During surgical scrubbing, Sikhs in healthcare are often expected to remove their kara, a religious metal bangle. This seems inconsistent with policies permitting rings. As some feel they cannot do this, refused entry theatres. The aim of this quality improvement project is explore if and how exclusion might affect propose an inclusive solution accordingly. Method Working MedRACE (a student-staff EDI group), we reviewed local national infection scrubbing policies. We also distributed survey nationally Sikh medical students’ experiences theatres, sharing our findings Trust leadership. Results found variations the reviewed, others proposing removal or impossible solutions (‘secured…above elbow’). Of 11 respondents, 9 had been told kara before entering theatres; 7 felt that wearing limited opportunities. Students reported Trusts (or staff) allowed them wear whilst did not. On presenting these Trust, updated policy permit communicated update staff. Conclusions variation on theatres excluding from may impact attainment deter pursuing careers.
