Experimental infection of chickens as candidate sentinels for West Nile virus.

We evaluated the susceptibility, duration and intensity of viremia, and serologic responses of chickens to West Nile (WN) virus (WNV-NY99) infection by needle, mosquito, or oral inoculation. None of 21 infected chickens developed clinical disease, and all these developed neutralizing antibodies. Although viremias were detectable in all but one chicken, the magnitude (mean peak viremia <10,000 P...

Controlling urban epidemics of West Nile virus infection.

THIS SUMMER, DALLAS, TEXAS, HAS BEEN IN THE CENTER of its worst-ever regional epidemic of West Nile virus (WNV) infection, with one-quarter of the nation’s cases identified in Dallas County. With a record high number of trapped mosquitoes testing positive for WNV, from June 20 to August 21 WNV infections have been confirmed in 270 county residents; 160 have been hospitalized, 51 have required i...

Alligators as West Nile Virus Amplifiers

Recent evidence suggests that American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis) may be capable of transmitting West Nile virus (WNV) to other alligators. We experimentally exposed 24 juvenile alligators to WNV parenterally or orally. All became infected, and all but three sustained viremia titers >5.0 log10 PFU/mL (a threshold considered infectious for Culex quinquefasciatus mosquitoes) for 1 to...

Urban land use predicts West Nile virus exposure in songbirds.

Urbanization is a widespread phenomenon that is likely to influence the prevalence and impact of wildlife pathogens, with implications for wildlife management and public health policies toward zoonotic pathogens. In this study, wild songbird populations were sampled at 14 sites along an urban rural gradient in the greater metropolitan Atlanta (Georgia, USA) area and tested for antibodies to Wes...

West Nile Virus, Guadeloupe

To determine whether West Nile virus (WNV) had reached the archipelago of Guadeloupe, a serologic study in horses and birds was conducted in 2002. Immunoglobulin (Ig) G, IgM, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and seroneutralization tests identified WNV infection in horses and chickens. Six months later, a high rate of seroconversion was observed in horses.
