The title compound, C21H25NO, is a member of a well known family of liquid crystals (4-oxy-4'-cyanobiphenyls, OCBs) and packs in lamellar-type bilayers in the solid state, through CN...H hydrogen bonds. This packing type is analogous to that found of other members of the n-OCB homologous series, viz. 7-OCB and 9-OCB.

The title compound, C(15)H(13)NO(2), was prepared through a palladium-catalysed Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction. The dihedral angle between the biphenyl rings is 40.96 (6)°. The meth-oxy groups are twisted slightly out of the plane of the benzene ring [C-C-C-C torsion angles = -3.61 (18) and 12.6 (2)°]. The packing of the molecules is stabilized by van der Waals inter-actions.

The title compound, C18H18O4, is a triclinic polymorph of the previously reported monoclinic polymorph [Han & Zhen (2005 ▶). Acta Cryst. E61, o4358-o4359]. In the crystal of the triclinic polymorph, molecules are linked by two pairs of C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds, forming a two-dimensional network parallel to (102), and enclosing loops with graph set motifs of R2(2)(8) and R2(2)(6).
