3D morphology of nematode encapsulation in snail shells, revealed by micro-CT imaging

چکیده

Abstract Many parasites and hosts are embroiled in an on-going arms race that affects the evolution of each participant. One such battle is between parasitic nematodes terrestrial gastropods which have co-evolved for 90–130 MY. Recently, snails been shown to encase kill invading using their shell as a defence mechanism. However, there remarkably little known about this process terms understanding where, when how fixed within shell. Also has never any attempt observe methods other than light microscopy. Therefore, we used micro CT scanning Cepaea nemoralis (a common host nematodes) 3D visualise encased nematode quantify morphological parameters. By taking approach future studies could use fossil shells conchology collections understand nematode/snail co-evolution.

Micro CT and Micro MR imaging of 3D architecture of animal skeleton.

Quantitative assessment of three-dimensional (3D) trabecular structural characteristics may improve our ability to understand the pathophysiology of osteoporosis, to test the efficacy of pharmaceutical intervention, and to estimate bone biomechanical properties. Considerable progress has been made in advanced imaging techniques for noninvasive and/or nondestructive assessment of 3D trabecular s...

High Resolution 3D Imaging of Ex-Vivo Biological Samples by Micro CT

Non-destructive volume visualization can be achieved only by tomographic techniques, of which the most efficient is the x-ray micro computerized tomography (μCT). High resolution μCT is a very versatile yet accurate (1-2 microns of resolution) technique for 3D examination of ex-vivo biological samples(1, 2). As opposed to electron tomography, the μCT allows the examination of up to 4 cm thick s...

Imaging the aqueous humor outflow pathway in human eyes by three-dimensional micro-computed tomography (3D micro-CT).

The site of outflow resistance leading to elevated intraocular pressure in primary open-angle glaucoma is believed to be located in the region of Schlemm's canal inner wall endothelium, its basement membrane and the adjacent juxtacanalicular tissue. Evidence also suggests collector channels and intrascleral vessels may have a role in intraocular pressure in both normal and glaucoma eyes. Tradit...

Quantification of the 3d Morphology of the Bone Cell Network from Synchrotron Micro-ct Images

In the context of bone diseases research, recent works have highlighted the crucial role of the osteocyte system. This system, hosted in the lacuno-canalicular network (LCN), plays a key role in the bone remodeling process. However, few data are available on the LCN due to the limitations of current microscopy techniques, and have mainly only been obtained from 2D histology sections. Here we pr...
