The title mol-ecule, C(15)H(15)Br(2), has crystallographic m2m site symmetry. As a result, all atoms, except for those of the methyl groups, are exactly coplanar. In the crystal structure, there are weak π-π inter-actions with a centroid-centroid distance of 3.8409 (15) Å between symmetry-related mol-ecules, which stack along the c axis.

THE TITLE COMPOUND [SYSTEMATIC NAME: 9-(9H-fluoren-3-yl)-9H-fluorene], C(26)H(18), was obtained unintentionally as the product of the synthesis of a compound based on fluorene-thio-phene units. The two fluorene rings are connected through C atoms in the 3- and 9'-positions, and the dihedral angle between the mean planes of the two fluorene units is 78.57 (6)°.

In the title compound, C(28)H(21)Cl, the dihedral angle between the two fluorene ring systems is 71.97 (4)°. There is an intra-molecular C-H⋯Cl hydrogen bond. In the crystal structure, the centroid-to-centroid distance between stacked fluorene ring systems is ca 4.22 Å, which indicates that there are no π-π stacking inter-actions between them.

9,9-Dibutyl-9H-fluorene-2-carbonitrile

The fluorene fragment of the title compound, C(22)H(25)N, is essentially planar, with an r.m.s deviation of the five-membered ring of 0.005 (2) Å. The dihedral angle between this ring and the outer benzene rings are 1.5 (2) and 0.7 (2)° while that between the benzene rings is 2.1 (2)°. The cyano group makes an angle of 0.3 (2)° with the attached benzene ring.
