228 Disparities in global representation within dermatology publishing: A bibliometric analysis

Intro: Low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) represent a disproportionate share of the global burden skin disease. Despite this, dermatologic research funding agenda-setting have been largely skewed towards disease in high income countries. Little is known about representation authorship dermatology literature, especially with regard to LMICs. The aim this study was quantify geographic recent academic publishing dermatology. Methods: We extracted all publications indexed PubMed from four journals highest impact factors dermatology, (Journal American Academy Dermatology (JAAD), JAMA (JAMADerm), British Journal (BJD) Investigative (JID)) Oct 1, 2018 Sept 31, 2021. Geographic determined by location either first or senior author’s affiliation. Range publication types were commentary, case reports, letters full-length articles. Results: Of 8,024 publications, U.S. had largest (48%). This held true for each journal individually, representing 68% literature JAAD, 22% BJD, 62% JAMADerm 39% JID. Other frequently represented included U.K. (8.6%), Germany (5.6%), France (4.7%) China (4.5%). LMIC authors underrepresented across journals, only 10.5% having any affiliation first/senior author (135 countries). most LMICs dataset besides India (2.4%), Brazil (1.1%), Chile (0.3%) Mexico (0.2%). Conclusion: Academic favor other high-income Greater needed ensure better matches need.
