1861. The Spectrum and Clinical Significance of Actinomyces Blood Stream Infection

Abstract Background Actinomyces species are Gram-positive anaerobic branching bacilli which commensal of oropharynx, urogenital and gastrointestinal tracts that is associated with infrequent chronic granulomatous diseases including cervicofacial, intrabdominal genital infections. Blood Stream Infections (BSIs) usually rare but becoming more frequent advanced modern diagnostic techniques. The presented study aims to evaluate the spectrum clinical relevance BSI at Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), Qatar. Methods A retrospective observational was conducted for all reported HMC between January 2016 November 2020. Isolates were identified using automated BD PhoenixTM MALDI-TOF microbiological methods. Results Over five years period, 37 episodes BSIs recorded majority as odontolyticus (40.5 %, 15/37). mean age 32 (range 1 month – 81 years), 62.2 % females (23/37), 64.8 had medical conditions while 78.4 developed fever presenting illness. Out total cases, cultures considered significant in only 48.6 cases (18/37), primary source infection oropharyngeal (10) followed by genitourinary (4), (2) 2 infected diabetic foot. However, 86.5 (32/37) received antimicrobial therapy mainly βlactam antibiotics or cephalosporins ranging 3 days 6 months. Antimicrobial given a short duration 87.5% (28/32) less than 14 no long-term complications four prolonged therapy. remaining Five patients did not receive any contaminants provider. Conclusion blood stream techniques affecting groups. Females comorbidities commonly affected A. predominant isolated species. Almost half clinically relevant, most courses complications.
