0094 Oscillatory Theta-Band Activity as a Sleep Stage Independent Measure of REM-like Activity throughout Sleep

چکیده

Abstract Introduction The importance of human cortical theta-band power during REM is suggested by its association with aspects emotional processing. Currently, this measured first visual-inspection polysomnography to define REM-sleep (scored-REM) and then summing the total theta within. However, activity attributed scored-REM has been hypothesized occur some scored-NREM (“covert REM”) conflates different sources. Oscillatory (OTA) in hippocampus associated regions hallmark REM-like sleep invasive animal studies. We posit that an EEG assessment specifically targeting all-night OTA a more accurate biomarker theta-dependent functions than current methods. As step towards testing hypothesis, we developed stage independent approach isolate from scalp-EEG. For validation, compared measure conventional-staging high-frequency activity. Methods Our method uses Irregular-Resampling Auto-Spectral Analysis remove aperiodic spectrum (a major source power), followed low-band normalization derive relative oscillatory-theta (OTA). Covert REM-containing epochs were calculated based on exceeding threshold. combined data two in-laboratory studies resulting sample size 42 healthy young adult subjects. Analyses used non-sleep restricted overnight recordings frontal channel. Results A clear peak was observed after Using all stages, found separation evidenced conventional staging (OTA: scored-REM>scored-NREM, p=0.003 vs theta: scored-REM<scored-NREM, p<0.001) correlation beta-band r=0.2, p<0.001 p=0.4). Supporting “covert REM”, present (p<0.001). On average single episode, covert 28% scored- NREM (range=2-85%). Conclusion novel automated for measuring activity, This across stages and, as reported companion abstract, test hypothesis constitutes better predictor REM-dependent behavioral effects conventions. The role of REM sleep theta activity in emotional memory

While non-REM (NREM) sleep has been strongly implicated in the reactivation and consolidation of memory traces, the role of rapid-eye movement (REM) sleep remains unclear. A growing body of research on humans and animals provide behavioral evidence for a role of REM sleep in the strengthening and modulation of emotional memories. Theta activity-which describes low frequency oscillations in the ...

Non-rem Sleep Stage Transitions Control Rem Sleep Rhythm

1423 Stage Transition Mechanism for Ultradian Rhythm—Kishi et al neurons themselves. Although further modifications of the original reciprocal interaction model, e.g., the incorporation of selfinhibitory cholinergic autoreceptors and excitatory interactions between cholinergic and non-cholinergic REM-on neurons, have been proposed over the past 30 years with new findings of synaptic details of ...

Frontal beta-theta network during REM sleep

We lack detailed knowledge about the spatio-temporal physiological signatures of REM sleep, especially in humans. By analyzing intracranial electrode data from humans, we demonstrate for the first time that there are prominent beta (15-35 Hz) and theta (4-8 Hz) oscillations in both the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and the DLPFC during REM sleep. We further show that these theta and beta acti...

Quantification of electromyographic activity during REM sleep in multiple muscles in REM sleep behavior disorder.

STUDY OBJECTIVES The aim of our study was to determine which muscle or combination of muscles (either axial or limb muscles, lower or upper limb muscles, or proximal or distal limb muscles) provides the highest rates of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep phasic electromyographic (EMG) activity seen in patients with REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD). SETTING Two university hospital sleep disorders...

Heart rate surges during REM sleep are associated with theta rhythm and PGO activity in cats.

Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep is characterized by periods of profound cardiac autonomic activation evident in heart rate surges in humans and canines. Our goals were to determine whether or not the heart rate surge phenomenon occurs in cats and to characterize concurrent central nervous system activity. Cortical and hippocampal electroencephalogram, electromyogram, electrooculogram, pontogenic...
