004 Physical activity monitoring to assess disability progression in multiple sclerosis

چکیده
To monitor multiple sclerosis (MS) disability, scales like the Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) and Multiple Sclerosis Functional Composite (MSFC) are commonly used. Both rely on a single clinical assess- ment in time which may not reflect patient’s performance their living environment. They also require training consuming. The SenseWear armband incorporates triaxial accelerometer sensitive to upper lower limb motion. A proprietary algorithm computes several physical activity variables, such as total energy expenditure, duration, metabolic equivalents (METs) average daily steps. Here we assess for its ability disease progression, alongside EDSS MSFC. Progressive MS patients (n=50) wore device one week, every 6 months 2.5 years. MSFC were performed at end of each week. was agreeable easy use. Patients showed progression across all three disability measures (p<0.01). Baseline activity, values correlated well between other. change with poorly, suggesting that they measure functional aspects have different pro- gression trajectories. In summary, monitoring is user-friendly ecological method progression. [email protected]

Association between change in physical activity and short-term disability progression in multiple sclerosis.
OBJECTIVE This study examined change in physical activity as a behavioral correlate of short-term disability progression in persons with multiple sclerosis over a 6-month period. DESIGN Panel design. SUBJECTS The sample included 292 persons with multiple sclerosis. METHODS Participants wore an accelerometer for 7 days as a measure of physical activity and then provided demographics and cl...

Background: Identifying the predictors of pain is important for both health professionals and researchers, because pain has repeatedly been found to be a strong predictor of activity limitations and participation restrictions. The objective of this study was to determine the predictors of pain presence and severity in a large, well-designed sample of community dwelling individuals with multip...
متن کاملAssociation Between Sunlight Exposure and Vitamin D Intake and Multiple Sclerosis Disability and Progression
Background: Some studies on Multiple Sclerosis (MS) have suggested that adequate vitamin D intake can modulate the course of MS and decreases its incidence. However, there are limited studies with conflicting findings on the relation between MS severity, its course, and vitamin D intake. Objectives: The current study aimed to compare vitamin D intake and sunlight exposure between MS phenotype...
متن کاملEvidence for a two-stage disability progression in multiple sclerosis
It is well documented that disability accumulation in multiple sclerosis is correlated with axonal injury and that the extent of axonal injury is correlated with the degree of inflammation. However, the interdependence between focal inflammation, diffuse inflammation and neurodegeneration, and their relative contribution to clinical deficits, remains ambiguous. A hypothesis might be that early ...
متن کاملDisability and progression in Afro-descendant patients with multiple sclerosis.
Multiple sclerosis (MS) prevalence is higher in Caucasian (CA) populations, narrowing the analysis of the impact of Afro-descendant (AD) populations in disease outcomes. Even so, recent studies observed that AD patients have a more severe course. The main objective of this study is to confirm and discuss, through a systematic review, that being AD is a risk factor for disability accumulation an...
