in this research the focus of the researcher is on the influence of american myths that have long been held and offered by the american culture and ideologies. sam shepard is conceived to be one of the greatest playwrights of the contemporary american theater. in his works he depicts broken characters who are struggling to keep up with the national expectations but are ceaselessly borne back to their static situations as before. by myths and media the researcher means to refer to all the standards that surround the american identity, and how dangerous the outcome would be when one fails to achieve these symbols. through the study of american culture we come across a very complex system of myths that urge the american individuals to either follow an illusion or flee to their obscurity and projection, and as jung explains in ‘psyche and symbol’, the result of such projections are often disastrous to the individuals. in this process, shepard’s main characters who are almost always men, go through a crisis of losing their masculine features and end up as pathetic victims of the illusive patterns of manhood in these plays. this research aims to bring many components of american culture into observation and display the role these items play in constructing and deconstructing american and consequently shepardian characters. the plays which are going to be the aim of this analysis include: curse of the starving class, buried child, and true west, which consist the collection mostly called shepard’s ‘family trilogy’.
