the present paper investigates how far ideologies can be tease out in discourse by examining the employed schemata by two ideologically opposed news media, the bbc and press tv, to report syria crisis during a period of nine months in 2011. by assuming that news is not a valuefree construction of facts and drawing on micro structural approach of schema theory, for the first time in discourse studies, a comparative analysis of 26 news texts on syria crisis, as a common ground, is conducted. microstructural approach of schema theory views each and all the words and phrases constituting authentic texts as schemata which express whatever concepts the author of the text wishes to convey if it is understood not only by itself but also in relation to other schemata forming the whole text. it can be argued that approaching discourse analysis by employing micro structural approach of schema theory would give discourse analysts a more panoramic view of the news than the approaches taken by critical discourse analysts, for this approach not only takes into consideration all schemata (words) in a text but also their relations to each other as they constitute it. each two news texts which are presented in the bbc and press tv homepages deal with the same theme. the analysis shows that the bbc and press tv applied exclusive schemata, which are indicative of their contrasting perspectives, in conjunction with the common schemata to cover the same issues. further analysis of some common semantic schemata also revealed that these common schemata are applied by these two news channels to convey different meanings.
