Salix matsudana is a large and rapidly-growing tree, with erect or spreading branchlets (upright willow). However, S. matsudana var. pseudomatsudana is one of the varietas, with pendulous branchlets (weeping willow). It has high ornamental value for its graceful pendulous branches. In order to study the molecular basis for this weeping trait, leaves and stems collected at different developmenta...
A new theoretical model to predict bubble frequencies and weeping rates at a submerged ori%ce with liquid cross-(ow has been developed. The model predicts a signi%cant in(uence of liquid cross-(ow velocity on bubble formation frequency, and especially on liquid weeping. Simulated values of weeping rates for di7erent ori%ce diameters, gas (owrates and liquid cross-(ow velocities show good agreem...
Sieve trays are widely used fractionating devices in separation and purification industries involving tray towers. According to the importance of trays, it is vital to predict lower operating range limits for such gas-liquid contacting devices. Weeping phenomenon observed in bubbling regime and occurs at low vapor flow rates. The experimental set up includes a 1.22 m diameter column with two te...
Circumnutation and winding in plants are universal growth movements that allow plants to survive despite their sessile nature. However, the detailed molecular mechanisms controlling these phenomena remain unclear. We previously found that a gravitropic mutant of Japanese morning glory (Pharbitis nil or Ipomoea nil), Shidare-asagao (weeping), is defective not only in circumnutation but also in t...
The response of cyanide metabolism rates of two woody plants to changes in temperature is investigated. Detached leaves (1.0 g fresh weight) from weeping willow (Salix babylonica L.) and Chinese elder (Sambucus chinensis Lindl.) were kept in glass vessels with 100ml of aqueous solution spiked with potassium cyanide for a maximum of 28 h. Ten different temperatures were used ranging from 11 degr...
A theoretical model for bubble formation and weeping has been developed. Potential #ow theory is used to describe bubble formation at the ori"ce. The in#uence of detached, rising bubbles on liquid pressure at the ori"ce is predicted by Oseen's modi"cation to potential #ow. Model predictions of bubble volumes, weeping #ow rates and weep points agree well with experimental results. ( 2000 Elsevie...
The weeping fig thrips Gynaikothrips uzeli Zimmermann (Thysanoptera: Phlaeothripidae) is newly recorded for the first time in the leaf galls of the weeping fig tree Ficus benjamina L. (Rosales: Moraceae) in the coastal area of Tartous, Syria. The thrips caused purplish red spots on the leaf surface of the host plant and the leaves curl. G. uzeili appears to be successfully adapted to this area.
High-density genetic map is a valuable tool for fine mapping locus controlling a specific trait especially for perennial woody plants. In this study, we firstly constructed a high-density genetic map of mei (Prunus mume) using SLAF markers, developed by specific locus amplified fragment sequencing (SLAF-seq). The linkage map contains 8,007 markers, with a mean marker distance of 0.195 cM, makin...
