long-term mechanical circulatory support is a life-saving technology while briding to heart transplantation. it increases the quality of life and preserves end-organ function for patients with advanced heart failure. the number of patients with advanced heart failure scheduled for heart transplantation before comorbidities escalate is on the rise. however, the device function is complicated by...
Dilated cardiomyopathy has been associated with left ventricular (LV) thrombosis which leads to substantial morbidity and mortality as a site for systemic emboli. We report an interesting case of a stroke and acute limb ischemia secondary to a large mobile pedunculated LV thrombus in 40-year-old patient with dilated cardiomyopathy.
Kounis syndrome is the concurrence of coronary spasm, acute myocardial infarction or stent thrombosis, with allergic reactions in the setting of mast-cell and platelet activation. In this report Kounis syndrome manifesting as stent thrombosis with left ventricular thrombus formation was triggered by a food-induced allergic reaction. The allergic reaction to food was confirmed by oral rice puddi...
INTRODUCTION Transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) is a reliable, noninvasive imaging method that is useful in the evaluation of cardiovascular thrombosis. We conducted a retrospective study of all the echocardiograms from patients in the postoperative care unit to assess the role of TTE in thrombus identification in the left ventricle. METHODS This retrospective database evaluation included a...
The cardiomyopathy that is comnmon among the South African Bantu population has been described by diverse names, among which are "nutritional heart disease" and "cardiovascular collagenosis with parietal endocardial thrombosis". While its cause is obscure, pathologists are in agreement regarding its principal morbid anatomical features. Among the most striking of these is the endocardial thromb...
The correlation between intracavitary thrombosis detected by cross sectional echocardiography and systemic embolism was studied in 126 consecutive patients with idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy who were examined from January 1980 to September 1987. A total of 1041 serial echocardiograms were obtained with 3.5 and 5 MHz transducers. The mean follow up period was 41.2 months. The survival rate w...
Embolic cerebral infarction due to cardiac amyloidosis is rare. We report two patients with amyloidosis who developed cerebral infarcts. These embolic infarcts were probably related to cardiac involvement of amyloidosis, which was based on results of myocardial biopsy (Patient 1), and kidney biopsy and characteristic echocardiographic features including granular sparkling, restrictive cardiomyo...
The prognosis of stress induced cardiomyopathy (SCMP) is generally known to be excellent, however, several fatal complications such as cardiac rupture and left ventricular (LV) thrombosis with subsequent embolic complications have been described. We report a rare case of SCMP complicated by LV thrombosis and multiple cerebral infarctions in a patient with essential thrombocythemia. After intrav...
