in extant islamic manuscripts we can find some observation reports of a black dot on the surface of the sun. these reports add that this dot should be the planet venus or mercury, transiting over the sun, showing that both of them are below the sphere of the sun. the research made so far on ibn sina’s report shows that it might relate to a really observed venus transit. quṭb al-dīn al-shīrāzī (...

The cover of the NASA 1984 report "Probing the Depth of a Star: The Study of Solar Oscillations from Space" featured Hirschhorn's the Pomodoro Sphere. That report led to the helioseismic study of the global Sun. Pomodoro's Cube at Stanford symbolizes HMI data cubes for investigation of localized regions in the Sun.

This work describes how the concept of time and the correlated concept of causation evolved during the last centuries: the way we look at time and causation has important implications on the way we do science and on the tools we choose to use. 1. Mechanical causality and Newton's universe: the life-machine model During the fifteen and sixteen centuries, the scientific revolution radically chang...

Q1 The numerical study of axisymmetric force-free magnetic fields in the unbounded space outside a unit sphere, presented in the first paper of this series, is extended to treat twisted fields in static equilibrium with plasma pressure andweight in a polytropic atmosphere. The study considers dipolar magnetic fields all sharing the same boundary flux distribution on the unit sphere and characte...

The difficulties of constructing a three-dimensional, continuous force-free magnetic field in the solar corona are investigated through a boundary value problem posed for the unbounded domain external to a unit sphere. The normal field component Bn and the boundary value b of the twist function on the unit sphere, combined with the demand for a vanishing field at infinity, do constitute suffici...

distribution of magnetic fields in the quiet-sun internetwork areas has been affected by weak polarization (in particular stokes q and u) signals. to improve the signal-to-noise ratio (snr) of the weak polarization signals, several approaches, including temporal integrations, have been proposed in the literature. in this study, we aim to investigate a proper temporal-integration time with which...

These inequalities distinguish...

Using data collected by the MACRO experiment from 1989 to the end of its operations in 2000, we have studied in the underground muon flux the shadowing effects due to both the Moon and the Sun. We have observed the shadow cast by the Moon at its apparent position with a significance of 6.5 σ. The Moon shadowing effect has been used to verify the pointing capability of the detector and to determ...
