objective status epilepticus (se) has been described as a series of major motor seizure without recovery of consciousness between seizures. se is a medical emergency that requires prompt diagnosis and appropriate treatment. in this article we shall conclude history, epidemiology, etiology, risk factors, the best management as well as the prognosis of the condition.
Background & Aim: Status epilepticus(SE) is the most common neurological emergency in childhood. Cases referred to pediatric intensive care units(PICU) are the most severely affected. Thus, data from admissions to PICU for SE may provide some insight for devlopment of stategies to reduce the severity and complications of the situation. We conducted this study to determine etiology, factors ...
PURPOSE To identify predictors of poor clinical outcome in patients presenting to the intensive care units with status epilepticus (SE), in particular for patients presenting with de novo status epileptics. METHODS A retrospective review was performed on patients admitted to the intensive care units with status epilepticus in two hospitals in Hong Kong over an 11-year period from 2003 to 2013...
Investigators from the Pediatric Status Epilepticus Research Group studied the time elapsed from onset of pediatric convulsive status epilepticus (SE) to administration of antiepileptic drugs (AED).
Status epilepticus (SE) is the most frequent neurological emergency requiring admission on the intensive care unit (ICU). The classification of status epilepticus may be dichotomised into the “convulsive” and the “non-convulsive” form. Whereas the diagnosis of generalised convulsive status epilepticus (GCSE) is easily made in view of the evident manifestation, the diagnosis of nonconvulsive sta...
Status epilepticus (SE) is one of the most common emergencies in neurocritical care. In Germany, the incidence of SE is about 17/100 000 per year, increasing with age [1]. Especially generalized convulsive (tonic-clonic) status epilepticus (GCSE) is still associated with a high risk of morbidity and mortality [2]. SE is defined as a single prolonged seizure or a series of two or more consecutiv...

The aim of this study was to review available clinical scores to predict outcome. METHODS Literature review. PubMed Search terms were "score", "outcome", and "status epilepticus" (April 9th 2015). In a rat model of status epilepticus (SE) induced by lithium and pilocarpine and refractory to midazolam, deep hypothermia (20 °C for 30 min) reduced EEG power over 50-fold, stopped SE within 12 min, and reduced EEG spikes by 87%. Hypothermia deserves further investigation as a treatment of last resort for refractory SE. This article is part of a Special Issue entitled "Status Epilepticus".
