Chinese poetry generation is a very challenging task in natural language processing. In this paper, we propose a novel two-stage poetry generating method which first plans the sub-topics of the poem according to the user’s writing intent, and then generates each line of the poem sequentially, using a modified recurrent neural network encoder-decoder framework. The proposed planningbased method ...

In blunt terms, the thesis I argue for here is that poetry is of no use in health care ethics education, because poetry is of no use. Put more circumspectly, insofar as a poem is given to health care students to read as a poem, it will not help achieve the ends of health care ethics education This is a conceptual point, arising from the idea that any genuine engagement of an individual with a p...

"A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning" shows many features associated with seventeenth-century metaphysical poetry in general, and with Donne's work in particular. Donne's contemporary, the English writer Izaak Walton, tells us the poem dates from 1611, when Donne, about to travel to France and Germany, wrote for his wife this valediction, or farewell speech. Like most poetry of Donne's time, it ...

Poetry is a complex art form. This research is focused on exploring and understanding poetry better by using deep learning. On one hand, there are many different styles of writing a poem, and on the other only a small fraction of poems end up passing the test of time and becoming popular. The objective of this work is to find the causal relationship (if any) between the poem style and it’s popu...

This paper presents the design, implementation and evaluation of the interactive installation The Muses of Poetry (MoP). The novelty of MoP is that it combines real-time character animation, semantic ...

Oftentimes, the question “what is this poem about?” has no trivial answer, regardless of length, style, author, or context in which the poem is found. We propose a simple system of multi-label classification of poems based on their subjects following the categories and subcategories as laid out by the Poetry Foundation. We make use of a model that combines the methodologies of tf-idf and Latent...

We propose a machine learning method for recognizing modern Arabic poems based on the common poetic features of modern Arabic poetry. The poetic features include: rhyming, repetition, use of diacritics and punctuations, and text alignment. The method can classify text documents as poem or non-poem documents with a very high accuracy of 99.81%.

In his article on poetry in health care education, Neil Pickering puts forward an argument of radical unpredictability: as we can never know in advance how a poem will be interpreted, it can be of no external use.(1) It is, however, exactly this potential to give rise to multiple interpretations that makes the poem valuable. We hold that the poem should be read and discussed with no other inten...

Metaphor is indispensable in poetry. It showcases the poet’s creativity, and contributes to the overall emotional pertinence of the poem while honing its specific rhetorical impact. Previous work on metaphor detection relies on either rulebased or statistical models, none of them applied to poetry. Our method focuses on metaphor detection in a poetry corpus. It combines rule-based and statistic...
