Genetic and phenotypic virulence markers of different categories of diarrhoeagenic Escherichia coli were investigated in 106 strains of enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) serogroup O86. The most frequent serotype found was O86:H34 (86%). Strains of this serotype and the non motile ones behaved as EPEC i.e., carried eae, bfpA and EAF DNA sequences and presented localised adherence to HeLa cells. Se...

The structure of a new O-polysaccharide from Escherichia coli O86:K62:B7 was determined using NMR and methylation analysis. The structure is as follows: [carbohydrate: see text]. Comparison with the previously published structure from E. coli O86:K2:H2 revealed that the O-polysaccharides from these two E. coli O86 serotypes share the same branched pentasaccharide repeating unit. However, they d...

Escherichia coli O86 belongs to the enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) group, some strains of which are pathogens of humans, wild birds and farm animals. The O-antigen gene cluster of E. coli O86 was amplified by long-range PCR using primers based on the housekeeping genes galF and gnd, and then sequenced. Genes involved in GDP-Fuc and N-acetyl-galactosamine (GalNAc) synthesis and genes encoding g...

Histo-blood group antigens (HBGAs) are considered as receptors/co-receptors for human norovirus (HuNoV). It has been reported that binding of HuNoV-derived virus-like particles (VLPs) to HBGA-like molecules-expressing bacteria increased the stability of VLPs to heat-denaturation (HD). In this study, we tested for HBGA-like-binding-conveyed protection against HD on viral replication using Tulane...

Previous study showed that some Gram-negative bacteria possess human blood group activity. Among them, Escherichia coli O86 has high blood group B activity and weak blood group A activity. This is due to the cell surface O-antigen structure, which resembles that of human blood group B antigen. In this study, we sequenced the entire E. coli O86 antigen gene cluster and identified all the genes r...

Escherichia coli O86:K61 has long been associated with outbreaks of infantile diarrhea in humans and with diarrheal disease in many animal species. Studies in the late 1990s identified E. coli O86:K61 as the cause of mortality in a variety of wild birds, and in this study, 34 E. coli O86:K61 isolates were examined. All of the isolates were nonmotile, but most elaborated at least two morphologic...

Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli isolated from diarrheal children and adults were studied. Twenty-two OK groups were set up as enteropathogenic Eschericha to include : O26: K60, O28a, 28c : K73, O44: K74, O55: K59, O86: K61, O86: K62, O111: K58, O112a,112c : K66, 0119: K69, O124: K72, O125: K70, O126: K71, O127: K61, O86: K63, O128: K67, O136: K78, O143: Kx1, O144: Kx2, O146: K87, A-D (Alkales...

The enteropathogenic role of cytolethal distending toxin-producing Escherichia coli was investigated by searching sequences homologous to the cdt genes of an O86 strain among 2,074 isolates from 200 children with acute diarrhea and 200 controls in Brazil. Only one (0.5%) diarrheic child and two (1.0%) non-diarrheic controls harbored cdt-positive isolates.

Out of 120 fecal samples collected from diarrheic calves at different localities in AL-Qalyoubia Governorate. 43 were positive for Escherichia coli with an incidence of 35.83%.Serogrouping of E.coli isolates recovered 8 belong to different "O" serogroups which were O55, O111, O26, O153, O8, O18, O86, O157, and "5" isolates were untypable. Antibiogram pattern of isolated E.coli serogroups showed...

Glycosylation processes are under high natural selection pressure, presumably because these can modulate resistance to infection. Here, we asked whether inactivation of the UDP-galactose:β-galactoside-α1-3-galactosyltransferase (α1,3GT) gene, which ablated the expression of the Galα1-3Galβ1-4GlcNAc-R (α-gal) glycan and allowed for the production of anti-α-gal antibodies (Abs) in humans, confers...
